Oh for housing prices that cheap! Is that in the country or in a more urban area? Australian housing prices suck ass. Friends have recently bought houses a quarter of the size for twice the price.

Waaaay in the country. Westfield, NY is nowhere near a real city. The closest cities are Buffalo, NY or Erie, PA. Not huge metropolitan centers. The entire town is 5000 people.

I suppose they had no real choice. Someone's getting a very old and nifty player piano that, with some repairs, will still play.

If it was close to either any real racing, or skiing, I'd consider it. It's not real different weather from here, so it's not really worth it as a vacation home from that perspective, and unless "loafing" is your vacation goal, your list of activities can be a little limited by the region. It DOES have a lot of good wineries nearby. :)

My grandparents' house is being (has been?) demolished to make room for new development. Probably luxury condos.
