Oh geez, I just figured out the mechanics of that death. CNN had few details, but I think I pieced it together...
Stingrays use their sting defensively. The most common stingray injury is when the stingray lashes out at the calf or shin of someone who's just stepped on one. That's why I was scratching my head at the chest injury.
To get struck there, he would have had to be holding it at chest height facing away from him... and according to the report, he was filming a documentary at the time.
Stingrays are so tame, though. I mean, in the Cayman Islands, they take groups of tourists out to swim with them. I saw several of them when I snorkeled on the Coral Reef in the Keys and our guides were completely unconcerned about them. I would tend to think that he just hugged the wrong stingray, too.
