..on updates.

Friday Night: GIGANTOUR! Megadeth and Dream Theater headlined a 5 band show, including "Dillinger Escape Plan" who SUCKED, and "Fear Factory" who were pretty darn good most of the time. I missed band #1 because I went to the WRONG VENUE. Yup, that's right! Luckily, both were in Boston, and only a 5 minute cab ride apart. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nemomori for not laughing at me too badly when I finally arrived. I had the foresight, that morning when I left the house, to grab a LARGE handful of earplugs (we had a bottle of 100, don't ask, and NO I do not snore) and stuff them in my pocket, which was a great idea, because the Bank Of America Pavillion, while great for Folk Acts, was INSANELY LOUD with these loud metal/thrash bands. I actually had enough to give a pair to each of the 4 other people we were with, and I had 4 new best friends. :)

Fear Factory was pretty good, I'd heard one or two of their songs before, and they had some pretty good music playing up there. Dillinger escape plan had, amazingly, already released at least one CD, but man were they crappy. Overly-mic'd instruments means you could hardly hear the lead singer, but that was probably good, because all he was doing was screaming or growling, there were NO recognizable WORDS in their songs. I thought their bassist was having a seizure from the way he was jerking around the stage, and had their lead singer actually THROWN the mic stand into the crowd, that would have been the best part. Sadly, he did not.

Now, Dream Theater, they seemed to be the group most of the fans had come to see, and they were the penultimate act of the night. It was dark outside (and in the tent) by the time they came on, which they used to great effect with their lighting and effects. I will say I've never seen them live before, or really listened to them that much, but the show was awesome to me, and awesome to the four other huge fans I was with. Their drummer, Mike Portnoy, is an extraordinarily gifted (and showy) drummer, with one of the biggest drum kits I've ever seen. John Petrucci, the guitarist, is similarly gifted on the guitar, as are the rest of the members of the group. They're overall a very talented group of guys, and put on a good performance, as well as a very loud one. Again, ear plugs were well-used here.

Now, Megadeth, well, as they said: "You've been great, We've been Megadeth!." That about covers it. They played some more obscure songs as well as their radio favorites, "Sweating Bullets" and "Symphony of Destruction". They also used a LOT of pyrotechnics, which when the first blast went off, and I do mean BLAST, scared the SHIT out of me, as well as heating me up 20 rows back from the stage! My ears hurt even WITH the earplugs, so I can't imagine the poor kids around us without them fared very well, but they all appeared to be enjoying it, throwing Hi5's and such. They played their songs, they moved around a bit. Dave's lost a significant amount of his vocal range, but he still did his songs justice.

So, thumbs up to Dream Theater for the best performance of the night, definitely, and thumbs up to [livejournal.com profile] nemomori for letting me scarf up the extra ticket!
