*BANG BANG BANG BANG CLICK* Hee hee hee
Sep. 9th, 2006 10:54 pmWhile on the way to Frisbee today with J,
nak3dmolerat called to say that for his birthday festivities today, he and some friends I hadn't seen in a really long time (SEVEN YEARS, PETE!) were going up to an indoor firing range to shoot some bullets at some innocent paper targets.
I have, in my life, fired a very small pistol (.22) and a rifle a few times. That's it. OF COURSE I WANTED TO GO.
siercia very kindly agreed to let me go, so after frisbee, we met up downtown at Chinatown, and after a few false starts, made our way up to Manchester.
We arrived (9 of us) and pretty much took over the place. We ended up pairing off, and I was paired with J, who had never fired any kinds of guns before, and was a tad bit nervous. I will admit I too was a little nervous, and it took a few minutes for the intense noise of the range itself to not make me twitch every time someone fired a round off. We got a lesson on basic gun safety, a once-over on how the gun we rented (A Sig Pro, 9mm, VERY NICE) worked, and into the range we went.
After the first shot where I realized the recoil wasn't going to plant the gun between my eyes, I started having a lot of fun. It was a lout louder than I expected it to be, but the recoil was a little less than I expected, so it all worked out. :) I fired 20 rounds (and even hit the target in respectable locations), and then Josh fired 10-20 rounds, and we switched off.
Other folks in the group rented a Glock 9mm (I didn't like it, recoil was a lot more than the Sig), a Glock .45 (that had less recoil than I expected, and fired better than the Glock 9mm), a .357 revolver (that sounded exactly like what you'd think of when you think "HANDGUN") and the really really really nice H+K MP5 submachine gun. Folks were a little nervous about firing it, but it really was the easiest model of all of the guns we rented to fire. Once you got over the 5.5lb heft of it, it had hardly ANY recoil, and the integral silencer made it nice and quiet.
Oopsily, since I had ZERO chance of hearing my phone ringing, and since the only clock they had there that I could see was 15 minutes off, I ended up getting back to late to pick up Miss Widget so
siercia could go out and go KNITTY. Sorry sweetie!!
I survived. I fired handguns. I didn't get shot, nor did I shoot anyone. Successful day.
(Now I just have to convince
siercia to come and try it!)
