Thanks to the department of public works for Weymouth, I have completely and severely disabled our Volkswagen Jetta.
After shoveling out the driveway and clearing out the car, Ms. Widget and I were going to trek to Best Buy to buy some small appliances and gifts for folks. We got about 3/4 of a mile away, and as I swerved to go around a chunk of ice the plow guy had left in the road, drove into the TRENCH they had plowed ACROSS the road. The oil pan and some unknown part of my cooling system, as well as a plastic guard were all smashed. I noticed the leaking fluids as I drove on, as I saw them in the rear-view mirror of the car, and when the car stalled and started overheating. The dashboard looked like a christmas tree with all the pretty red lights on it. :/
I managed somehow to nurse it back (in the snow, with a constantly stalling engine) to the gas station nearby, called Siercia, called the roadside assistance, and then started the 1/2 mile trek back to the house, in the snow, carrying Widget. MAN she's heavy.
AAA called me back to say they weren't towing today (Gee, great, don't tow on the days you're probably needed the most, niiiiice), so the poor VW is going to sit in the service station until they can be bothered to come and get it tomorrow, when I can have it towed to my VW dealer, where they can look at me and laugh and tell me how much it's going to cost to fix. I'll be DAMNED if I'm not gonna squeeze money out of the negligent DPW for that hack-job on plowing.

Date: 2003-12-07 01:35 pm (UTC)I had the same experience in September when my car was submerged in high water and the engine died. They said 2 1/2 or 3 hours to get a tow truck there. So I got some guy with a pickup truck and chains to tow me home "redneck-style." Then with another call to AAA, I found that since I was no longer stranded with my car, they wouldn't tow it to a service station until the next day. Ended up having to pay $70 for a private tow.
